Documentary Depicts CA's Gartland Fire as One to Remember
"The old-timers told me 'There's going to be one fire you're going to remember your entire career.' Sure enough, that Gartland Fire was it," said Retired SFFD Battalion Chief Tony Soule.
On Dec. 12, 1975, the five-story Gartland Apartments burned in San Francisco's Mission District. No San Francisco fire since has caused a greater loss of life, or involved the same number of rescues by San Francisco firefighters.
"The Gartland Fire" tells the story of the fire and its impact on the community through the memories of residents, community leaders, and the firefighters who fought the fire.
Produced and filmed by active duty and retired San Francisco firefighters to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the San Francisco Fire Department in 2016, 'The Gartland Fire" is now available to stream or download through the Vimeo streaming service.
