FSRI Releases Online Training for Lithium-Ion Battery ESSF Fires
Columbia, Maryland, December 2, 2021 – UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) announced today the release of the new “Fire Service Considerations with Lithium-Ion Battery ESS” online training course. This online course focuses on a deflagration incident at a lithium-ion battery energy storage system facility in Surprise, Arizona. We will share our analysis and recommendations to improve codes, standards, and emergency response training to protect first responders, maintenance personnel, and nearby communities.
“Firefighter line of duty injuries and near-miss incidents provide a unique opportunity to interact with and collect information from the scene and the personnel involved. This can make the difference in putting all the pieces together and gaining insights that may otherwise not be possible,” said Steve Kerber, vice president of research and director of FSRI. “Our goal is to make sure the firefighter experiences are taken into account, providing valuable context to the findings so that they can be channeled into actionable insights for other fire service personnel to prevent future close calls and potential fatalities.”
In this course, students will review:
- our analysis and recommendations to improve codes, standards, and emergency response training to protect first responders, maintenance personnel, and nearby communities.
- the results of follow-up experiments conducted to gain additional insights into energy storage system failures.
- tactical considerations for the fire service to further understanding and hopefully prevent future incidents like this from occurring.
