MI Police Want FirefighterTraining to Help on Calls

Learning the skills would allow Pinconning police to help the all-volunteer Pinconning-Fraser Fire Department, which is struggling with staffing issues.

Police officers in a Michigan city want training to become volunteer firefighters in order to help fill the department's dwindling ranks.

Pinconning police already are responding to medical emergencies, but they don't have all the skills required to handle some of the calls, WNEM-TV reports. Not only would the additional training help with the all-volunteer Pinconning-Fraser Fire Department's staffing issues, but it also could improve response times and potentially save lives.

“Our biggest goal is public safety, and that’s not just on the law enforcement side,” Police Sgt. Terry Spencer told WNEM.

In order for the crossover training to happen, the fire department needs to adopt some policy changes that would make. Last week, the idea was discussed at a public meeting, and city officials were open to continue exploring the possibility.

"It appears most of the (fire) board is in support of it. So we're thankful for it," Spencer told WNEM.
