Massachusetts firefighters rescued a woman trapped on the third floor of a burning apartment building Sunday night.
Responding crews, as well as residents of Bartley Nolan Condominiums in Fitchburg, heard explosions as the 24-unit building caught fire at about 5:30 p.m., WBZ-TV reports. The location and design of the complex also created difficulties when it came to getting water to put out the flames.
“One thing was the size of the building," Capt. Dante Suarez told the TV station. "It’s a 24-room apartment complex. We did have a problem with some water. … We’re up on a hill here, so we did have to lay quite a bit of line to get the high pressure from the main street down below."
An aerial was used to save one resident, who climbed out on a third-story ledge after her ceiling fell in, The Telegram & Gazette of Worcester reports. The woman was taken to the hospital along another resident, but details about their injuries were not given.
The cause of the fire, which burned for several hours into Monday morning and displaced as many as 60 people, was under investigation, according to WBZ.
