An Illinois fire chief and two firefighters suffered serious injuries after they bailed out of a second-story window during a residential fire Monday.
The fire broke out shortly after 8:30 a.m. at an old hotel that had been converted into an apartment building in Beardstown, WCIA-TV reports. Roughly a dozen departments and EMS agencies responded to the call.
Crews rescued a resident who was trapped on the second floor of the burning building. The person was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries, but the individual is expected to recover.
During the call, Chief Brian Becker and two firefighters needed to bail out of a window on the apartment building's second floor. Becker was taken to the hospital, and he is still being treated for his unspecified injuries, The State Journal-Register reports.
One firefighter also is still in the hospital in stable condition. Another firefighter was treated and release.
Crews were able to get the fire under control by about 1 a.m., according to WCIA. The department said the extensive damage has kept the building as an active fire scene as of Monday morning.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
