Oct. 11—TROY — City firefighters were able to save a woman who was trapped on the second-floor during a Monday afternoon fire.

Fire Chief Eric McMahon said crews arrived at the building on Eighth Street around 12:30 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the second floor. As they began battling the fire, a dispatcher informed them the woman was trapped in a second-floor bedroom.

A firefighter was able to go in and find the woman while other firefighters kept the flames in the front of the building, McMahon said. The firefighter discovered the woman was trapped because the rear access door to the stairs was blocked.

Fire crews used a ladder to get the woman out of a second-floor window.

McMahon praised the work of the firefighters who responded to the call.

"They did a fantastic job," he said. "Usually when people are trapped it creates an extra level of problems that need to be solved. Everyone knew their job and did it."

All the other occupants of the building were able to make it out safely. The woman was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation treatment out of an abundance of caution, McMahon said. No firefighters were injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
