LA FFs Struggling to Respond Calling Voters for Help

Nov. 14, 2023
Kenner firefighters' starting salary is $8.92 per hour and they've had to borrow apparatus from other departments.

Kenner firefighters pull out all the stops to answer the emergencies of local residents.

Now, they're the ones calling for help -- from voters.

“The members haven’t had a salary increase. They’ve been at $8.92, starting salary since 2007, 2008,” Fire Chief Terence Morris told WWL

Pay is just one of the issues. With apparatus out of service, they've had to borrow fire trucks from departments including Terrytown and the Jefferson Parish Fire Training Academy.

"We have five of our apparatus that’s currently out of service due to repairs, some of them major and they have been out of service for an extended period of time,” he said.

The new property tax -- which is on the ballot when voters go to the polls Saturday -- would replace the current 7.4 millage established 40 years ago with an 18.2 mil tax.  It would generate about $11 million a year.

If passed, the new tax would cost the owner of a $300,000 home about $400 a year.
