Two people escaped serious injury in a fiery plane crash on a North Carolina interstate Thursday night.
The pilot radioed the tower at Asheville Regional Airport saying assistance may be required. But it didn't make it to the runway, Tina Kinsey, the airport spokesperson told The Asheville Citizen-Times.
Instead, the pilot forced landed the Diamond D-40 on nearby I-26. It burst into flames upon impact.
"We transported two people out of the plane crash, but there does not appear to be any life-threatening injuries," said Allen Morgan, Buncombe County on-duty EMS supervisor.
Buncombe County Emergency Services, firefighters from Skyland Fire Department and an Asheville Airport public safety officer responded to the fiery scene.
The highway will remain closed for an undetermined time while inspectors determine the extent of damages.
