Historic Mansion in Northbridge, MA, Destroyed in Five-Alarm Fire

Northbridge firefighters found heavy fire through the roof, and initiated an exterior attack.

A massive fire tore through a 23-bedroom historic mansion in Northbridge.

Northbridge Fire Department Chief David White told WCVB firefighters encountered heavy flames on the second and third floors of the Whitin Lassell Manor, 

"They are always a challenge -- the way they're constructed -- lots of pockets. Took a while to get the fire under control," White said.

Firefiighters called for additonal manpower and the incident went to five alarms. 

The residents escaped without injury.

The house is on the National Regiser of Historic Places. 

Firefighters remained at the scene Friday morning.
