Chelsea, MA, Firefighters Rescued During Five-Alarm Blaze

March 2, 2024
The two firefighters who called a 'Mayday' were rescued by crews via ground ladders, Chelsea Fire Chief Leonard Albanese said.

Two firefighters were trapped briefly during a five-alarm fire in Chelsea Friday.

"There was a mayday call. We had members of our ladder searching the second floor of the 50 (Maverick) building, and the conditions rapidly deteriorated. They were rescued via a ground ladder from the right-hand side of the building. They all made it out safely. They all returned to work," Chelsea Fire Chief Leonard Albanese told WCVB.

"We have a three-family and a two-family that were affected. We have some damage to the further exposure, but we were able to hold it to the two initial fire buildings," he said.

Everyone made it out on their own including people at a daycare that operates on the second floor.

The cause is under investigation.
