FDNY firefighters battled a massive blaze that spread from a Brooklyn supermarket to at least two other buildings.
There were shoppers in the store when the fire broke out. But, all made it out OK.
Six firefighters and a civilian suffered minor injuries. Crews initially tried to enter the structure but were quickly evacuated due to the intensity of the blaze.
One of the challenges they faced was the wood-framed construction, ABC7 reported.
"We actually have probably the equivalent of a seven to eight alarm here," FDNY Assistant Chief Tom Currao said. "We went up to a fifth alarm. And, and then on three successive occasions we called for more engines and two more ladders. So we were really trying to get ahead of this."
Dozens of people who were left without a home are being assisted by the Red Cross.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
