Several FDNY firefighters were caught in a collapse of overheads signs during a three-alarm fire in Manhattan Saturday.
The fire, in the 12oo block St. Nicholas Ave in the Washington Heights neighborhood, was reported around 2 p.m. Crews found fire on the first floor of a six-story building, with stores on the first floor and apartments above, according to 1010WINS.
The fire reached three alarms, with over 150 firefighters responding as the fire spread to multiple stores.
During the overhaul phase (about 8:35 in the above video), two large sign above the entry doors fell down on firefighters who were performing overhaul in the video, captured by Skyler Fire. Firefighters can be seen getting knocked to the ground by the collapse.
Crews scrambled to the scene, pulling their downed colleages from the debris.
"It just goes to show you how dangerous this job can be. Here's the fire is largely out and we have a collapse that could of seriously our hurt firefighters,” FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief John Sarrocco said in statement released by the department.
Officials told 1010WINS that three firefighters were injured.
