Without standpipes, Minneapolis firefighters carried hoses up to the third floor of the apartments.

Minneapolis firefighters rescued residents hanging out windows of a burning apartment building Tuesdady night.

Four people were transported to a hospital. Three suffered burns while another had smoke inhalation, KARE reported adding that a firefighter was treated for a heat-related issue.

The building lacked standpipes which created challenges for firefighters.

"Standpipes help us get water directly from the standpipe system... from the fire suppression system. So we did have to lay lines all the way up to the third floor through the rear (of the building) and also through the front," Assistant Chief Melanie Rucker said.

The roof partially collapsed during the incident.
