Dark smoke from the fire was visible for miles as Fort Worth firefighters operated at the incident.

Fort Worth firefighters battled the intense heat while tackling a massive scrap yard fire Friday afternoon.

Black smoke from the fire at Texas Industrial Scrap Metal was vsibile for miles. There were no delays in flights in or out of Meacham International Airport.

"Anytime that we come in combat with fire, heat is something we're up against on a regular day. With all of the protective equipment we wear, we've got multiple layers. It protects us, but it also does not let that heat escape from the inside of our suits. On a day when you're looking at 100-plus just the physical toll of dehydration, fatigue. We do rotate companies in and bring in our gear truck," Fort Worth Fire Public Information Officer Craig Trojacek told nbcdfw.

The gear truck allows firefighters to remove sweaty, heavy gear for cleaner, lighter uniforms.

A rehab unit, stocked with water, Gatorade, and other items, also was on the scene.
