Pittsburg, CA, Residents Say Building's Alarms, Sprinkler Failed

Aug. 19, 2024
A woman who fell asleep while cooking said some residents jumped from balconies to escape the fire.

Unattended cooking is blamed for a fire that destroyed 16 apartments in Pittsburg early Sunday.

Jordan Williams told KTVU: "I tried to make something to eat and dozed off right then and there. And when I woke up, the whole living room and kitchen area was on fire."

Williams said she tried to use the fire extinguisher in the hallway, but it didn't work.

She said her friends, who were staying over, pulled her out of the burning apartment. She said it was chaos as people were running, trying to get out and yelling to wake others up.

The flames got so big some people were forced to jump off balconies.

She and other residents claim the smoke alarms didn't go off and the sprinkler system failed as well.

"Nothing went off, nothing. That fire wouldn’t have moved and expanded the way it did so fast if there was something to help us," she said.

Contra Costa fire officials said the fire spread from the apartment to an adjoining building.

Williams said she was relieved no one was hurt.
