The body of a man was discovered Thursday night, Sept. 19, in a shed near a Monrovia house that burned earlier this week.

Monrovia police and the fire department are investigating the fire as arson.

Officers headed to the 500 block of East Colorado Boulevard around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, due to a large amount of smoke in the area and numerous people calling 911 reporting they heard an explosion, according to a police statement.

They saw a home fully engulfed in flames. Police evacuated the nearby area. No one was home at the time, police said.

Firefighters put out the fire which local TV reports showed spread to a second residence. Nobody was injured, police said.

Authorities haven’t determined the cause of the fire and haven’t released estimated cost of damages.

On Thursday, police received a report shortly after 10 p.m. that a person was found dead in a shed near the house where the fire started, police said.

As of Friday, the medical examiner’s office has not yet identified the body, which they described as that of a man in his 50s.

Police ask anyone with information about the fire to call them at 626-256-8000.
