Oct. 13—Several fire companies responded to the Modern Landfill facility at 1445 Pletcher Road in Lewiston early Saturday morning where a large pile of rubber tire chunks was found burning.
Chief Spencer Lilly of Lewiston Fire Company No. 1 reported that the fire company was called to the scene about midnight Saturday and recognizing the severity of the situation, called in additional resources.
Tankers from Lewiston Fire Company No. 2, Sanborn Fire Company and the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, along with tankers from Barker and Terrys Corners, were requested to assist in containing and extinguishing the blaze. Additionally, one engine from Youngstown responded to assist.
Ransomville and Bergholz covered while the other companies were on the scene.
Lilly said crews faced significant challenges, including the exposure of a methane pipe, two parked bulldozers that were at risk and 15 mph winds made fighting the fire even more challenging.
Firefighters worked till almost 11 a.m. to battle the blaze. Swift and coordinated efforts of all responding units were crucial in managing this challenging incident, Lilly said, adding, that the teamwork and dedication displayed by the firefighters ensured that the fire was brought under
control, minimizing potential damage and hazards.
EMS coverage was provided by Lewiston 1, Mercy EMS, and Niagara County EMS, ensuring medical support was readily available on the scene.
There were no firefighter injuries reported. However, one landfill employee was treated and released.
