Multiple families were displaced after a fire Wednesday afternoon at an apartment complex in Chesapeake damaged 10 of the apartments.

The Chesapeake Fire Department was dispatched about 1:10 p.m. to Thrive Apartment Homes in the 1000 block of Thrive Place in the Deep Creek section of the city. When firefighters arrived, heavy black smoke and fire were coming from the second floor and roof line.

Residents in the apartment where the fire started evacuated after hearing smoke alarms, according to a press release from Capt. Steven Bradley.

The fire moved through the attic space and spread to adjacent units. Portsmouth Fire & Rescue provided additional resources when a second alarm was called, the release said.

The fire was put out using handlines and streams from two ladder trucks. A fire wall helped to prevent damage to even more apartments, according to the press release.

Fire, smoke and water damaged 10 units, displacing multiple families. The release did not state how many families were affected.

One man was treated on scene for minor burn-related injuries, but did not need to go to an emergency room. The Red Cross was helping the displaced families.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
