Fire Destroys Historic Church in Marshall, TX

Dec. 10, 2024
Heavy timber, layered roofs and water issues hampered Marshall firefighters' efforts.

The fire marshal is investigating a massive blaze that destroyed a historic church in Marshall.

Marshall Fire Chief David Rainwater told KSLA firefighters had issues with water supply.

Capt. Scott Barmore said the church is a historic landmark that was built in the 1860s. The building had no fire protection other than a fire alarm in the daycare.

“It has a lot of historic value, it is on the national and Texas historical landmark. The main chapel, what made it hard to fight fire right there is it’s heavy timber, and its roof over roof that they’ve built over the years, so it’s really hard to get in there and get that out,” Barmore said.
