Two people were found dead inside an abandoned church in northwest Atlanta late Tuesday night, according to authorities.

Atlanta fire officials said they got a call around 11:30 p.m. about an abandoned church in the 600 block of Cameron M. Alexander Boulevard that was fully engulfed in flames. It was the former home to the Amazing Grace Christian Community Church, according to online property records.

The blaze initially prevented firefighters from searching the building, but once the fire was under control, they found two people inside, the fire department told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. They were declared dead at the scene.

The victims have not been publicly identified.

Neighbors told Channel 2 Action News that the building had been deserted for years. It sits just across the street from another church.

It is not clear how long the church had been vacant. Fulton County records show it sold to a residential property management company in June 2021 for $1.2 million.

State Fire Marshal investigators were called in to determine the cause of the blaze.

No other details have been released by officials.
