A church that was under construction in Lamont was destroyed Thursday morning after a heavy fire, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

KCFD said firefighters were dispatched to Habecker Road after receiving reports of a structure fire at 4:55 a.m. It noted the fire was visible from Highway 58.

The church, which was about 10,000 square feet in size, was engulfed in fire and smoke. KCFD said the roof and several walls of the structure collapsed due to the flames.

KCFD said firefighters tried to suppress the fire from above by spraying water from a 100-foot ladder. After the fire was under control, the fire crew searched for potential victims and found no one.

KCFD's heavy equipment specialists assisted in breaking apart the debris to fully extinguish the fire, the agency said.

It reported there were no injuries as a result of the fire. An investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
