Multiple Waterfront Homes Burn in Benton, IL

Dec. 22, 2024
Benton's fire chief said the fire started in a home that was undergoing renovation work and they had limited water to battle the fire.

At least two homes were destroyed and a third sustained serious damage as flames spread along Benton Lake.

When firefighters arrived, two homes were engulfed in flames, Benton Fire Chief Shane Cockrum told WSILTV.com.

The fire began in a home that had been undergoing renovations around 1:30 p.m.

“We saw some smoke, but we thought someone was burning some leaves,” Rosemary Marlow told TheSouthern.com. “Well, it turned out to be more than burning leaves. One of our neighbors saw the house on fire and called 911.”

Over 40 firefighters from nearly a dozen departments responded to assist in battling the fire, which spread to a third home.

The area had limited water supply with one four-inch main in the neighborhood, so tankers responded to the scene.

“There are small water lines because infrastructure wasn’t built to have a lot of water run down those dead end lanes,” said Cockrum. “The fire required a substantial amount of water.”

Cockrum said two homes were a total loss.
