Two firefighters were injured when they slipped on the ice at a house fire in Old Saybrook Thursday night.

The middle of the 5,800-square-foot house collapsed during the incident.

Firefighters pumped water from nearby ponds as there were no hydrants in the area, Old Saybrook Fire Chief Joe Johnson told WFSB.

Johnson said he called for a public works crew to assist as the area was turned into a skating rink.

The residents made it out OK.

Firefighters battled the flames for more than 11 hours.
