There were no serious injuries as the 172 passengers and six crew members evacuated the burning plane near the Denver gate.

An American Airlines plane caught fire at Denver International Airport Thursday evening, forcing passengers to evacuate.

The Boeing 737-800 that took off from Colorado Springs was en route to Dallas-Fort Worth when the pilot requested to land due to an engine problem, CBS reported.

The plane landed safely and caught fire as it was taxiing to a gate.

The 172 passengers and six crew members escaped without serious injury. Some climbed out onto a wing while others used slides.

The NTSB is investigating.
