After 68 Years, Volunteer Fire Department in Torrington, CT, to Close

March 19, 2025
Torringford fire officials said they had no choice as the number of volunteers has dwindled the past few years.

After 68 years of service to the community, the Torrringford Volunteer Fire Department will cease operations on April 1.

"They've served the community very well and it's a very sad day to see that they're going to be closing," Former Torringford Fire Commissioner Buddy Milo told a news 12 reporter. "My heart goes out to all the volunteers that have worked all these years. So hard, so dedicated, gave up a lot of their lives, a lot of their family time, both men and women that have done this. They've done a fantastic job, and I wish them luck."

Fire officials said they had no choice as the cadre of volunteers has continued to dwindle. The department is the latest in the area to shutter.

In 2017, fhe Burrville Volunteer Fire Department in Torrington closed while the Morris company shut down the following year.
