June 28 -- A rapidly moving wildfire in Costilla County grew to 2,000 acres by Thursday morning, forcing evacuations in the Forbes Park area and triggering an emergency declaration.

The Spring fire is burning east of Fort Garland and evacuation notices were sent to 383 residents, according to San Luis Valley Emergency staff.

The fire was at zero percent containment Thursday morning. The Costilla Board of County Commissioners declared a disaster late Wednesday night.

There have been no reported injuries, according to a 6:30 a.m. report. Roads leading into Forbes Park and Wagon Creek Subdivisions are closed.

La Veta Pass remains open, but firefighters have asked the public to use caution due to heavy first responder activity.

People evacuating from Forbes Park were sheltered at the Blanca-Fort Garland Community Center. On Wednesday night, the fire was burning toward the Wagon Creek area, where pre-evacuation orders were posted.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
