Jan. 11—As the death toll rises from the wildfires currently ravaging Los Angeles County, strong winds are expected to fuel the flames further over the next several days. Here's the latest:
Death toll reaches 16, high winds still expected
Sixteen people have died in the LA County Sheriff's jurisdiction as a result of the fires, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office said in a press release Saturday evening. Eleven deaths are related to the Eaton Fire, while five deaths were recorded in the area of the Palisades Fire.
About 153,000 residents are under evacuation orders in the city and countywide. Curfew orders in all evacuation zones are in effect from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
"Elevated to critical fire weather conditions" are expected to impact the county through Wednesday, Los Angeles County fire chief Anthony Marrone announced at the press conference, with moderate to locally strong Santa Ana winds.

"These winds, combined with dry air and dry vegetation, will keep the fire threat in Los Angeles County high," Marrone said.
Eaton Fire
As of Saturday afternoon, the Eaton Fire is recorded to have burned 14,117 acres and is 15% contained. The fire has damaged or destroyed over 7,000 structures, Marrone said.
Much of the historic community of Altadena has burned in the fire. Evacuation orders remain in place in Altadena, along with parts of Pasadena and Sierra Madre.
Palisades Fire
The Palisades Fire has burned 23,654 acres as of 4:37 p.m. Saturday, according to Cal Fire. It is 11% contained.
The fire grew 1,000 acres Friday night in the area of Mandeville Canyon, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Todd Hopkins announced at Saturday's press conference. Approximately 5,316 structures (which can include cars, he said) have burned in the fire, 426 of those structures being homes. Over 105,000 people have been evacuated throughout the area.
