Crews from multiple departments battled a brush fire that erupted in the south end of Aransas County, injuring five firefighters and damaging a Rockport Volunteer Fire Department apparatus.

Five Texas firefighters were injured battling a brush fire that burned more than 100 acres and damaged an apparatus Tuesday.

The blaze broke out at around 1:15 p.m. in the south end of Aransas County, according to the Rockport Volunteer Fire Department, which initially responded to the incident, along with Fulton and Lamar volunteer fire departments. Once at the scene, firefighters discovered large piles of burning brush, debris and garbage, with multiple spot fires ignited by high winds and low humidity.

Additional departments from around the area were called in as the fire grew to more than 100 acres. Several homeowners also used home water hoses to try to protect endangered property.

A Rockport fire apparatus was heavily damaged by the blaze, according to the department. Five firefighters also suffered minor injuries, and they were treated at the scene or at nearby medical facilities.

Crews worked into the night to try to keep the fire contained, and bulldozers were used to cut a fireline to prevent the flames from spreading more, officials said. The Texas Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the blaze to see how it started.
