Teens Arrested for SC's Table Rock Wildfire That Consumed 13,000 Acres

The cause of the Table Rock wildfire that has burned through about 13,000 acres was caused by four teens improperly disposing of something they were smoking, the South Carolina Forestry Commission alleges in arrest warrants.

Three of the teens arrested Tuesday are adults — Nyzaire Jah-Neiz Marsh, 19, of Taylors; Tristan Tyler, 18, of Greenville and Isaac Wilson, 18, of Greenville. They are charged with negligently allowing fire to spread to lands or property of another.

They were booked into the Pickens County Detention Center and released on personal recognizance bonds of $7,500.

The juvenile was also charged with negligently allowing fire to spread to lands or property of another and was released into the custody of his parents.

If convicted, the teens face a sentence of five to 30 days in jail or fines between $25 and $200.

A news release from the Forestry Commission said deputies and other first responders first saw a rapidly growing fire as they were searching for a missing hiker in Table Rock State Park March 21. They evacuated seven hikers and questioned several about how the fire started.

“During preliminary interviews, four subjects, three adults and one minor, were relocated to the C. David Stone Law Enforcement Center in Pickens for follow-up questioning,” the release said.

Firefighters have battled the blaze using water drops from helicopters and borade from a DC-10 as well as with hundreds of firefighters on the ground.

The area received 1.5 inches of rain over the last two days, helping the contain the fire. Firefighters are constructing control lines and will use unmanned aircraft to map hot spots.
