INDEPENDENCE, Ky. --

A woman was killed and two firefighters were injured by a fire and explosion inside a home in Independence, Ky.

The fire was reported at the home on Sharpsburg Drive at about 4:40 a.m. Thursday.

When fire crews arrived at the home, they found flames shooting from a bedroom window.

A woman and her son were inside the home when the fire started. The woman suffered burns and was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. She died shortly before noon. Her son made it out of the home safely.

Firefighters battled the flames from outside because there were oxygen tanks inside the home.

"We got that knocked out pretty good. We went into the house, went into the room, one oxygen tank did explode," said Independence Fire Chief Richard Messingschlager.

Two firefighters were inside the home when the tank exploded. They were taken to a hospital as a precaution and later released.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
