Sept. 03--As many as 13 people were taken to area hospitals Monday night after a crash involving several vehicles on the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeast Extension, a Lehigh County dispatcher said.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 476 were closed for about half an hour as rescue crews responded to the crash, authorities said. One lane reopened shortly after 11 p.m., but firefighters remained on the scene at 11:30 p.m.

A state police dispatcher said the crash involved a van and that the passengers' injuries ranged from minor to moderate.

The crash was reported in North Whitehall Township between Levans and Shankweiler roads at 10:09 p.m. At least two people were trapped in a vehicle, according to dispatches.

Rescue crews from throughout the region responded by driving north in the southbound lanes from the Lehigh Valley interchange to reach the scene.
