Tractor-trailer Crashes into Oregon Fire Station

June 28, 2014
The driver was trapped after crashing into Hermiston Fire Station 2.

The living area of a Hermiston Fire & Emergency Services Station 2 suffered extensive damage after a tractor-trailer slammed into the building Friday morning.

A passerby called 9-1-1 reporting a motor vehicle collision on Highway 207 and Punkin Center Road at 5:22 a.m.

"When we got there we found out the station was hit," Lt. J.W. Roberts said.

When the battalion chief responding to the crash arrived at the scene, he radioed that the fire station had been struck.

"The firefighters who respond to Station 2 put on their gear and went to help out," Roberts said.

The cab of the truck crashed right through the corner of the building. It passed through the office area and stopped in the training room. On the second floor, the living room was also damaged.

"Right now the entire living are is unlivable," according to Roberts.

The roof of the cab suffered serious damage during the wreck.

The driver was entangled in the cab and firefighters freed him.

He was flown by Life Flight to Kadlec Medical Center with various injuries.

Hermiston Fire & Emergency Services is a combination department and Station 2 is not always staffed. The two live-in members were not in the station when the accident occurred.

Robert said that firefighters can continue to respond and operate from the station, but only from the apparatus bays.

After the rig was removed from the station, it left a two-story hole.

"We just thank God that there was nobody in the station at the time."
