Injuries Reported in Pittsburgh Bridge Collapse

Jan. 28, 2022
Pittsburgh Public Safety officials said three people were taken to the hospital after a bridge collapsed in Frick Park.

Ten people were injured when a snow covered bridge collapsed in a Pittsburgh park Friday morning and a Urban Search and Rescue team has been called in.

The Fern Hollow Bridge in Frick Park collapsed around 7:30 a.m. while a Port Authority transit bus and several cars were on the two-lane bridge.

Two passengers and the driver of the bus were taken to the hospital, according to WTAE.com. Officials told the television station that a total of 10 people were injured, and none were serious.

Pittsburgh Fire Chief Darryl Jones told the Pittsburgh Gazette that firefighters rappelled 100-150 feet to get to the people stranded on the bridge.

An Urban Search and Rescue team was dispatched to the scene to check for any possible victims underneath the bridge, Pittsburgh Public Safety tweeted.

Following the collapse, a gas leak was reported in the area and forced the evacuation of nearby homes. Residents told the newspaper that the leak sounded like a roaring jet engine. The utility company was able to shut off service to the area.

President Biden is scheduled to speak in Pittsburg Friday morning about the national infrastructure plan, which includes bridge and roadway maintenance, WTAE reported.
