Houston Construction Workers Saved after Floor Collapse

Firefighters pulled out as many as nine workers who were hurt when the top floor of a hotel under construction collapsed as they were pouring concrete Monday.

Nine construction workers were rushed to area hospitals after the top floor of a hotel under construction north of downtown Houston collapsed as the workers poured concrete Monday morning.

There were as many as nine workers atop the building in the 3400 block of N. Main Street, just east of Interstate 45 North when the top floor collapsed, sending at least seven of them to the sixth floor below, according to Houston Fire Department Assistant Chief Isaac Garcia, who oversees emergency response. The call came into 9-1-1 shortly after 9 a.m.

Two of the nine injured in the collapse were able to climb down to the fifth floor, where firefighters pulled them out using the bucket of a ladder truck.

The injuries of the eight other workers range from broken bones to lacerations, Garcia said.

Fire officials initially stated that there were as many as 15 workers injured in the collapse, although they later clarified the correct number of injuries.

North Main Street will be closed for some time so city inspectors can ensure that the building won't sustain any further collapse.
