Chicago FD: 14 People Injured in 50-Car Expressway Pileup

April 15, 2020
Icy conditions led to the multiple-car accident on Chicago's Kennedy Expressway on Wednesday, sending at least five ambulances, a triage van and a command van to the scene.

About 50 vehicles are at the scene of a crash on the Kennedy Expressway near North Avenue early Wednesday and 14 people have been transported to hospitals, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

In addition to the 14 people who were taken to hospitals, 32 others were evaluated at the scene but will not be transported, according to CFD. Low traction on the expressway caused multiple collisions, according to fire officials. Illinois State Police’s Chicago district warns that roads are covered in sheets of ice, which have caused multiple vehicle crashes throughout the city.

For the crash on the Kennedy Expressway, fire officials enacted an EMS Plan 2, which automatically sends at least five ambulances, one EMS field officer, one deputy chief paramedic, a triage van, a command van and a deputy district chief to the scene. Chicago fire has also alerted suburban ambulance response to assist with the crashes.

All southbound lanes on the Kennedy near North Avenue will be closed for several hours, according to Illinois State Police. Multiple northbound lanes are also closed.
