OSWEGO, NY—When Oswego firefighters arrived at the flooded street Thursday, water was just below the Jeep’s windows.
At least one person was trapped inside the Jeep, firefighters said, and the water was rising fast.
The Oswego City Fire Department rescued at least one person from the vehicle stuck on a flooded street near Oswego High School around noon, said Capt. Paul Conzone. The Jeep was past a barricade in a flooded area on West Utica Street, he said. No one was hurt.
Heavy, persistent rainfall has kept firefighters busy today in Oswego.
Firefighters had responded to about 30 calls so far reporting flooded basements, Conzone said in the early afternoon Thursday. As residents come home from work and find their basements filled with water, he expects the fire department will get more calls.
It stopped raining shortly before 2 p.m. in Oswego.
“The danger right now is really flooded basements,” Conzone said.
Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow issued a travel advisory in the city calling for no unnecessary travel. The advisory ended at 6 p.m.
A state of emergency has been declared in the town of Oswego. All roads in the town have been closed.
