GA Crews Aid Rescue Efforts for Capsized Ship

Georgia firefighters are assisting the U.S. Coast Guard with search and rescue efforts after a cargo ship capsized off the coast Sunday.

The 665-foot Golden Ray went on its side at around 2 a.m. in St. Simons Sound near Brunswick, ABC News reports. Four crew members are still missing after rescuers pulled 20 to safety.

Search efforts, however, have been stalled because Coast Guard officials have determined it's too dangerous to go inside the ship. Crews will resume efforts once the vessel is determined to be stable.

Glynn County firefighters have been working with the Coast Guard, as well as the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and other local agencies in this operation. While the search is ongoing, the Port of Brunswick has been closed, and ships are being kept back at least a half mile from the capsized Golden Ray.

Earlier, smoke was coming from the downed ship's starboard side, according to ABC. And while no flames or smoke have been seen in the afternoon, officials are unsure if there are any fires still burning inside the ship, the news outlet added.

The crew members aboard the Golden Ray are South Korean and Filipino, and the International Seafarers' Center in Brunswick has been providing hygiene items and other supplies, CNN reports. The cargo ship, which was sailing under a Marshall Islands flag, had been headed to Baltimore, according to MarineTraffic.com.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators are expected Monday to help determine why the ship capsized, CNN added.
