MA Firefighters Use 'Banana Boat' to Save Woman Stuck in Mud

CENTERVILLE, MA—A woman was rescued after being stuck in mud at the end of the Herring River on Wednesday, according to Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills fire Capt. Sean Greene.

Fire crews responded at 5:49 p.m. to the area of 40 Broken Dike Way for a report of a woman stuck in the mud and weeds, Greene said. She appeared to have walked over there, he said.

Residents in the area heard the woman calling for help and notified the department, Greene said.

The crews deployed an inflatable "banana boat" to reach her, Greene said. Firefighters Jack McGonigle and Zac Hammond were able to locate the woman and bring her back to shore without incident, according to a statement from the Fire Department.

It was unclear how long the woman had been stuck there. Greene said she seemed very tired but was able to speak to rescuers. She was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with apparent minor injuries, he said.
