RI Fire Department Swimmers Rescue Two Stranded on Rocks

Oct. 12, 2020
Middletown and Little Compton fire departments dispatched marine units to save two apparent fishermen who were stranded on the rocks of West Island off Sakonnet Point.

No major injuries were reported after two people were rescued from West Island on Sunday night.

West Island is located off Sakonnet Point in Little Compton. The Middletown Fire Department was called around 8:20 p.m., Battalion Chief Jon Reese said.

Reese did not know how the two people got to West Island or why they were there, but however they got there, they weren't able to get back to the mainland; he said there was no boat at the scene.

A Facebook post from the Middletown Firefighters Local 1933 said the two people rescued were fishermen.

Both Middletown and Little Compton dispatched fire department marine vessels to the scene, according to the Facebook post. Two Middletown rescue swimmers recovered the two stranded people from the rocks and brought them to Little Compton's boat.

The two people were brought to a Tiverton Fire Department rescue wagon for medical evaluations.
