NJ FFs Rescue Horse Stuck in a Muddy Stream

Jan. 4, 2022
Firefighters in Howell worked alongside a veterinarian to rescue a horse named Lucy that was trapped in a muddy stream.

HOWELL - Firefighters went to the aid of a horse that fell into a stream near Echo Lake and got stuck in the mud, using straps, ropes and sheets of plywood to free the animal, authorities said.

Southard Fire Department No. 1 posted the news of the rescue on Facebook Sunday. The call went out that afternoon.

Southard was joined by Freewood Acres Fire Company No. 1, Squankum Fire Company No. 1 and Howell Township Office of Emergency Management.

A veterinarian oversaw the operation, according to the post.

As unusual at it seems, the save Sunday may not be so rare. Firefighters in Jackson freed a missing horse from the mud in November.

The Howell horse, named Lucy, was being given warm fluids and doing well, Southard added in a postscript.

There was no word on whether a rider was involved in the Sunday incident.
