For the 38th year, Firehouse shares and compares statistics about company and department levels, funding, staffing and pay for the career fire service. A total of 184 fire departments took part in this year’s survey, representing 43 states, the District of Columbia and 2 Canadian provinces. The departments represented in this latest survey protect 76,949,606 people, and they have budgets totaling more than $28 billion. They provide the services with 3,320 engine companies, 1,236 ladder companies, 1,578 ambulances and numerous specialized units. They responded to nearly 1.3 million fire calls, over 9.1 million EMS calls and over 12 million total calls in 2018.
