Fourth Annual First Responders Relay Returns to Las Vegas on October 19

The 48-mile relay, welcoming both active and retired first responder athletes, will start and finish at the Hilton Las Vegas Resort and Spa, concluding with an award ceremony to honor the fastest team.

LAS VEGAS, NV (August 8, 2024) – The California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF), a non-profit organization committed to promoting sport and physical fitness among first responders, is excited to welcome the return of the fourth annual First Responders Relay. This event will feature first responder personnel from throughout the United States and the world representing law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, custom and correctional officers. Taking place on Saturday, October 19 at the Hilton Lake Las Vegas Resort and Spa, the 48-mile relay encourages camaraderie and friendly competition among public safety professionals from across the globe.

“We are so excited to be hosting the First Responder Relay for our fourth year in Las Vegas,” says Jim King, President of the California Police Athletic Federation. “A core part of CPAF’s mission is to bring together public safety personnel from across the globe, and the First Responders Relay serves as a pivotal event for these dedicated athletes to converge, promote physical fitness, and advocate for overall health and wellness. The annual relay can be therapeutic for our first responders, offering a well-deserved break from the pressures of the job and fostering a sense of camaraderie and accomplishment outside of work duties.”

The 48-mile race will start and finish at the Hilton Lake Las Vegas Resort and Spa, with each stage of the relay ranging from 3.9-7.8 miles. The route begins at Las Vegas Parkway and continues along the River Mountains Loop Trail, following a clockwise path through the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Boulder City, and Henderson. Upon completing their leg, runners will return to the Hilton for the award ceremony. The team achieving the fastest overall time will receive The Duke Nyhus/Bob Burke perpetual trophy, recognizing their exceptional athleticism and commitment to personal fitness. Registration opened on May 31, and athletes can register here through September 18.

The relay is broken up into nine categories which include an Open Division, Mixed Division, Women Division, Senior Division, 500 Division, 250 Division, Station/Division, Support Services Division, and Support Services Mixed Division. Support categories are open to all support personnel including 9-1-1 Dispatchers, Detention-Custodial Officers, Crime Scene Investigators, Lifeguards, Reserve Officers, and Volunteer Firefighters. To be eligible, participants must be publicly employed as full time, and retirees and separated employees with over 10 years’ service must show proof. The fourth annual First Responders Relay is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 19 at the Hilton Lake Las Vegas Resort and Spa (1610 Lake Las Vegas Pkwy). Spectator admission is free.

The First Responders Relay is one of four events that the California Police Athletic Federation hosts, in addition to the bi-annual World Police & Fire Games, the US Police & Fire Championships and the North American Fall Classic which debuted in 2023.
