May 19, 2022
A suspected drug overdose of a New Britain firefighter exposed an issue that resulted in terminations, demotions and retirements.

The death of New Britain firefighter Matthew Dizney opened an investigation that determined drug use was common within the department.

Officials determined that firefighters were using drugs including Adderall, heroin, fentanyl, marijuana and others on- and off-duty, according to WFSB.com.

“There was at least one or two occurrences where we knew they were under the influence at work,” New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart told the television station.

The investigation started after Dizney died at home on Jan. 26 and officials believed his cause of death was an overdose.

The outcome of the investigation led to a fire lieutenant being terminated and seven members being demoted. Several other retired during the investigation.
