Nov. 21--ALTOONA -- A rural Altoona residence was destroyed by fire late Sunday night and at least five firefighters were injured, according to Township Fire Department and other emergency radio reports and a witness.

The home at 1136 Briarcliffe Drive in the town of Washington is owned by Jim and Robin McCorison.

The fire was reported shortly after 9 p.m. Initial reports indicated a fire in the attic and later Township reports indicated heavy smoke from several sides of the structure. The house was eventually engulfed in flames.

Township, Altoona, Fall Creek and other fire departments responded to the scene.

Several ambulances were dispatched to the scene around 9:50 p.m. on reports of five firefighters injured. Radio reports indicated a 40-year-old fireman received neck burns when the roof collapsed, while four others had minor respiratory and other injuries. They were all transported to medical centers for treatment.

Icy road conditions initially hampered emergency vehicles in getting to the scene.
