Patient Dies After Virginia Ambulance Crash

Sept. 25--HAMPTON -- A critically ill man died Saturday evening when the ambulance that was taking him to the hospital was struck by an SUV, according to a news release from the Hampton police department. The 42-year-old Hampton man was on his way to the Sentara Careplex at about 8 p.m. when the ambulance was struck. A 2002 Chevy Suburban hit the ambulance at the intersection of West Mercury Boulevard and North Armistead Avenue, causing it to flip onto its side.

The 42-year-old Hampton man was on his way to the Sentara Careplex at about 8 p.m. when the ambulance was struck.

A 2002 Chevy Suburban hit the ambulance at the intersection of West Mercury Boulevard and North Armistead Avenue, causing it to flip onto its side.

Seven people were injured and transported to local hospitals. Six of them had non-life-threatening injuries, including four people from the Hampton Fire Department. They have all been released from the hospital, according to the news release.

The 42-year-old patient died at the hospital.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, and police are waiting to release the man's identity until his cause of death has been determined.
