KANSAS CITY, Kan. --
Two Kansas City, Kan., firefighters were injured Monday night when a burning home collapsed on them.
The home at the corner of Seminary Street and South Minnie Street was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived just after 11 p.m. The home collapsed a short time later as firefighters were battling the fire from the outside of the building.
The two firefighters were taken to the hospital, according to Assistant Chief Craig Duke. Duke said the firefighters are expected to recover from their injuries.
"The house collapsed in on itself," said neighbor Andrea Galindo. "The firemen barely got out. And it collapsed right on top of them. One of the firemen fell over the gate. The falling home missed him by just an inch," Galindo said.
No other injuries were reported at the fire.
Firefighters remained at the home Tuesday morning. They are waiting for heavy equipment to sift through the debris so they can put out any remaining hot spots.
A nearby home was damaged when the burning home collapsed. Residents are staying elsewhere while the damage to their home is assessed. Other homes in the neighborhood were without power Tuesday morning. Power is expected to be restored later today, firefighters said.
The residents of the home that collapsed are also staying elsewhere.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is under way, fire investigators said.
