La. Crash Causes Natural Gas Leak, Evacuations

MARRERO, La. -- A natural gas leak forced the evacuation of a Marrero neighborhood for a couple hours Wednesday night. Officials from the Marrero Rogusa Fire Department said a car crashed into a house on the corner of Acre Road and Cohen Avenue, hitting the natural gas line in front at about 8 p.m. Neighbors said the crash sounded like an explosion. As a precaution, firefighters immediately evacuated 50 to 60 homes in the area.

A natural gas leak forced the evacuation of a Marrero neighborhood for a couple hours Wednesday night.

Officials from the Marrero Rogusa Fire Department said a car crashed into a house on the corner of Acre Road and Cohen Avenue, hitting the natural gas line in front at about 8 p.m.

Neighbors said the crash sounded like an explosion.

As a precaution, firefighters immediately evacuated 50 to 60 homes in the area.

Workers from Atmos Energy shut off the gas at 9:30 p.m. and said they hope to have the line repaired sometime Thursday morning.
