HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut firefighter has died and three others have been injured in a house fire in Hartford.
The fire broke out Tuesday night at a two-story, wooden home in northwest Hartford. Residents made it out safely, and fire officials are investigating what caused the blaze.
A witness said she saw a firefighter jump out of a window, amid billowing, blinding smoke.
One firefighter was burned and taken to a hospital, WFSB-TV reported. The TV station said all three injured are expected to recover.
Kerry Williams witnessed the fire and told the station: "I saw smoke billowing out of the top of the house, and I said that looks like my mother's house. And I said 'Oh, my God, my mother's house is on fire!' And sure enough it was."
Fire and police officials did not immediately release any details. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman and Mayor Pedro Segarra confirmed the casualties and sent their condolences to the firefighters' families. They called the firefighter who died a hero.
"Tonight's tragic events are another reminder of the incredible sacrifice that our state's first responders make on a daily basis," the governor said.
