Two San Diego Firefighters Stabbed at Medical Call

The firefighters were called to an intoxicated male near downtown and were injured when a struggle ensued.

Two firefighters were stabbed during while they were helping a man at a medical call on Wednesday afternoon. 

Crews responded to the 600 block of Park Boulevard, just a few blocks from Petco Park, around 4 p.m. 

"They were rendering aid on an intoxicated subject and...they got into an altercation and both firefighters were stabbed," San Diego Police Spokesman Humberto Hernandez told CBS8.com.

An eyewitness told NBCSanDiego.com, "(The suspect) kept struggling, kept fighting, kept swinging, kicking. And I didn't know he had a weapon and I seen him hit the fireman." 

The witness said that firefighters lifted the short of one of the injured firefighters, and it revealed the stab wound. 

The firefighters were transported to UCSD Medical Center and Scripps Mercy Hospital.

They are listed in stable condition. 

San Diego police took the suspect into custody at the scene. 

"It's sad for them to go through something like this when they are only doing their job," an eyewitness told CBS8.
