N.Y. Vol. Ambulance Crew Member Killed in Crash

A member of the Bergen Volunteer Fire/Ambulance Dept. died after the ambulance he was riding in slammed into the back of a backhoe.

An update New York volunteer ambulance crew member was killed when the ambulance in which he was a passenger slammed into the back of a slow moving backhoe on its way to a medical call early this morning.

The name of the Bergen Volunteer Fire Department member has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The local publication Democrat and Chronicle reported the victim was male, the driver way also male and a female crew member was in the back at the time of the crash.

According to The Daily News, online edition, the deceased crew member was a passenger in the ambulance when it crashed into the construction vehicle in Riga in Genesee County. The report indicated that sun glare may have contributed to the cause of the crash which happened at 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

The Daily News also reported there were two others in the ambulance at the time of the crash, the driver and another passenger who were not injured in the wreck, but where taken to a local hospital for observations. The operator of the backhoe was also not injured. The victim died at the scene of the crash. 

Other news agencies and social media outlets reported the victim was local and has a lot of family members living in the area.
